Barbara Wiernik Explores - MARIA PIA DE VITO

Encounter #1

Maria Pia De Vito, Rome May 27, 2019

Do you know Maria Pia De Vito, a wonderful neapolitan singer, full of fantasy?

For my research on the influences and heritage of contemporary jazz singers in Europe, it was essential for me to meet her since I feel close to her musical sources.

Maria Pia De Vito is a must! As a singer-songwriter, she mixes contemporary jazz, world music and mainly Neapolitan music (her cradle), classical and folk music in order to create and develop her own style.

This first meeting was most intense for me!

Her main influences:

She has many different interests and influences; R.A. Ramamani (singer from Bangalore, India) is one of them, especially with the album Jyothi (ECM) with Charlie Mariano. She flew over, trying to integrate some small ideas of Hindustani and Carnatic music, as well melodically as rhythmically but always trying to make it her own.

Also she’s now really involved into the Brazilian music.

Norma Winstone in Azymuth is also a big influence for her.

Her favorite song from other musicians is: “Horses in Rain” (Django Bates - Sidsel Endresen) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36evWowb_gs

From her: “Il Paradiso dei Cacciottelli” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xEqYklBP_w
